About Goolwa

A historic river port on the Murray River, Goolwa boasts a rich Aboriginal heritage, as well as fascinating European history dating back to 1853. Along with regular farmer’s markets, Goolwa features a range of museums and waterfront dining opportunities. It is also an excellent gateway to the Great Australian Bight and Coorong National Park.

Things to do in Goolwa

Discover the history of Goolwa at the Goolwa National Trust Museum, home to vintage vehicles, maritime artefacts and a priceless patchwork quilt. At certain times of the year, you can also ride the Cockle Train, a historic steam train that runs from Goolwa to Victor Harbor, where you can swim at pristine beaches, hike clifftop trails and snorkel reefs in Encounter Bay.

Don’t miss seeing the famous PS Oscar W, a Swedish-made paddle steamer that dates back to 1867. You can still ride on the paddle steamer today, and embark on a Murray River cruise from the Port of Goolwa Wharf. If you’re hanging around the wharf, duck into The Steam Exchange Brewery for a refreshing craft beer and river vistas. Alternatively, grab a coffee and light meal at Hector’s on the Wharf.

Enjoy a day on the links at South Lakes Golf Club, which features 18 holes designed to accommodate beginners and experienced golfers. Stock up on equipment at the pro shop or grab a light meal and drink at the on-site Birdie Bistro Restaurant. Wander down Cadell Street to indulge in fish and chips, Indian cuisine or deli-style sandwiches at one of the restaurants or cafes.

Love the outdoors? Make a day trip out to Coorong National Park, a 130-kilometre-long expanse of diverse wetlands, saltwater lagoons and sand dunes.
