About Getafe

Getafe is a bustling city located 13 kilometres south of Madrid’s metropolitan centre. Although known as an industrial city, it is also home to the University of Carlos III Madrid, the oldest air military base in Spain and Cerro de los Ángeles, the geographical centre point of the Iberian Peninsula.

Visitors to Getafe should begin their exploration with a visit to the beautiful "Hill of the Angels" or Cerro de los Ángeles. The hilltop is home to Our Lady of the Angels, a picturesque 14th-century monastery with a variety of sculptures and monuments. The site has witnessed several Spanish civil war battles and bullet holes from these encounters can still be seen on the monuments and walls of the monastery. Getafe can be reached from Madrid Atocha Railway Station, as trains are frequent and the journey takes around 20 minutes. There are five stations within the Getafe region, two of which connect to the Metro network. There are also several bus lines connecting Getafe to and from central Madrid. The city of Getafe is easy to walk around with Santa Maria Magdalena Cathedral and Parque de la Alhóndiga within 15 to 20 minutes’ walk from the centre.

Getafe has a rich history dating to lower Palaeolithic times. Ancient artefacts, stone tools and pots have been excavated from the areas around the banks of the Manzanares River. The city has been dominated by the Romans and the Moors throughout the centuries.
