About Galway Bay

With the fabled Aran Islands at its entrance, Galway Bay is an Atlantic Ocean inlet on the west coast of Ireland. It sprawls between County Galway and County Clare, with parts of the bay designated as a Special Area of Conservation as they provide important habitat for seals, otters and birdlife.

Dominating the southern entrance to Galway Bay are the Cliffs of Moher, which boast magnificent views of the Aran Islands. If you drive north, you’ll arrive in the picturesque harbour village of Ballyvaughan, with the surrounding beaches considered among the finest in Ireland.

Hidden in an inlet of Galway Bay is Oranmore Castle, a 15th-century fortification that can be explored on guided tours. It's just a stone’s throw from the lively city of Galway, which is famed for its traditional Irish music scene. At its heart is the atmospheric Latin Quarter, where art galleries, independent stores and cafes are ringed by medieval walls.

Getting there

Shannon Airport is around an hour’s drive from Galway Bay and has flights to destinations across Europe and North America. Renting a car is the most convenient way of exploring the natural attractions and historical landmarks that surround Galway Bay.
