Towering above the city, Freiburg Minster is one of Europe’s most beautiful Gothic cathedrals. The sandstone facade was completed in 1330, making it Germany’s only Gothic church completed in the Middle Ages. Looking for a day out among nature? The Schauinsland Mountain cable car can whisk you high above the Black Forest. At 3.6 kilometres, it’s Germany’s longest cable car ride and commands sweeping views of Freiburg, the Rhine valley and the Kaiserstuhl Mountains.
As you wander around the Old Town, don’t forget to look down. Its cobblestone streets are lined with tiny “Freiburg Bachle” canals that once served as sewers. Today crystal-clear water streams through the canals and creates a serene atmosphere.
Getting around Freiburg im Breisgau
Except for trams and bicycles, the city centre is a pedestrian-only zone, so the best way to explore is on foot. Buses run to nearby towns and villages, while a rental car can offer flexibility and convenience.
