About Frederikssund

Overlooking a narrow point of the Roskilde Fjord, Frederikssund is a historic Danish town dating back to the Middle Ages. In 1810, it received the status of a market town and flourished with the arrival of the railway in 1879. Today, Frederikssund is famed for its Viking Games, which recreate the atmosphere and drama of the Viking Age.

It occupies a Functionalist-style building designed by Tyge Hvass and explores Willumsen’s legacy as a leading figure in the Symbolist and Expressionist movements. Changing exhibitions by contemporary Nordic artists are also held at the museum.

In the heart of town is the Frederikssund Church, a red-brick monument that dates back to the 12th century. It’s topped by a stepped tower and surrounded by a cemetery where some of Frederikssund’s most prominent residents are laid to rest. Coincide your visit with a service to explore the serene interior. Another church of note is the Græse Kirke with its beautiful altar.

Across the Roskilde Fjord is the Frederikssund Museum, Færgegården, which explores the cultural heritage of the fjord. Learn about the early inhabitants who searched for food along its shores and those who sailed through the waterway en route to explore the world. After your visit, you can grab coffee and ice cream from the museum store before strolling the surrounding forest trails.
