About East Midlands

One of England’s nine official regions, the East Midlands encompasses cosmopolitan cities, quaint market towns and spectacular natural areas. It extends from the summit of Kinder Scout in the Peak District to the coastal community of Skegness and includes the furthest place from the sea in the United Kingdom, the village of Coton in the Elms.

Things to do in East Midlands

Whether you want to get cultured in Leicester and Nottingham or enjoy the Peak District’s great outdoors, the East Midlands offers a unique getaway.

Sightsee in Leicester. Home to a monumental cathedral where Richard III’s remains are interred, Leicester is the largest settlement in the East Midlands. Learn about the life and legacy of the former king at the King Richard III Visitor Centre and explore the ruins of the castle where he spent several years. In the Cultural Quarter, you’ll find the aptly-named Curve Theatre and award-winning restaurants.

Explore Peak District National Park. Hugging the north-west corner of the East Midlands, Peak District National Park encompasses charming villages, centuries-old manor houses and undulating hills traversed by hiking trails. Visit the magnificent Elizabethan mansion of Hardwick Hall and the “Palace of the Peak”, Chatsworth House, then enjoy Pennines vistas while walking through Hope Valley. The Peak District is also home to Conkers, a family-friendly attraction with an enchanted forest play area and a treetop walkway.

Visit Warwick Castle. Overlooking the River Avon, Warwick Castle was originally established as a wooden fort by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. Join a guided tour to explore its opulently decorated staterooms and view the armoury on display in the Great Hall before strolling the gardens designed by “Capability” Brown. In the dungeons, costumed actors bring to life the 15th-century War of the Roses.

Getting around East Midlands

East Midlands Airport is the main aviation gateway to the East Midlands and has flights to destinations across Europe and North Africa.
