Where to stay in Ostfriesische Inseln

About Ostfriesische Inseln

The East Frisian Islands will challenge your ideas of Germany with long sandy beaches, grass-covered dunes and an infectious holiday atmosphere. The archipelago is set off the coast of Lower Saxony and is made up of seven islands, each with its own unique charm. Relax on the postcard-perfect beaches and discover the Wadden Sea, a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Things to do

Sunseekers descend on the East Frisian Islands to enjoy some of the best beaches in Germany. There are beaches for every occasion, whether you’re travelling as a family, want to make a splash with water sports or looking for clothing-optional stretches of sand. While high season spans from May to September, the East Frisian Islands are beautiful throughout the year. Visit in the winter to enjoy windy walks along uncrowded beaches.

Baltrum is known as the “Sleeping Beauty of the North Sea” and is the smallest island in the group. Wander around a pair of tiny villages, explore the rolling sand dunes and top up your tan on deserted stretches of beach. Guided mud flats tours run at low tide and are a unique way to experience Wadden Sea National Park.

Spiekeroog is anchored by a picturesque village shaded by chestnut trees. Admire the traditional, red-roofed houses, sip hot chocolate at a cosy cafe and visit the excellent Inselmuseum to find out more about the unique history and heritage of the islands. Exhibits include taxidermy wildlife, old-fashioned farming equipment and family trees of local inhabitants.

Getting around

Most islands in the East Frisians archipelago are compact and easy to get around on foot. Cars are banned on the islands, with the exception of Norderney and Borkum. Bicycles are a fun and eco-friendly way to get around, though they’re not allowed on Baltrum and Spiekeroog. Most islands are serviced by ferries that run to the German mainland at least once a day.
