Where to stay in Durant

About Durant

Nicknamed the “Magnolia Capital” of Oklahoma, Durant is the capital of Bryan County and the headquarters of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. It has a lively student population as home to Southeastern Oklahoma State University, which offers courses in everything from aviation to occupational safety. Durant is on the doorstep of historic Fort Washita and one of the largest reservoirs in the United States, Lake Texoma.

Things to do

Delve into the history of Bryan County at the Three Valley Museum, a non-profit organisation named after the “Queen of the Three Valleys” by Henry McCreary. Learn about the Native American tribes who are indigenous to south-east Oklahoma and explore the small town exhibit, which features a recreated doctor’s office, general store and parlour from the early 20th century.

You can stroll around the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University to admire the columned facade of Morrison Hall and the grand Bennett Memorial Library. Coincide your visit with a home game of the Savage Storm at Paul Laird Field or let the kids run loose on the play equipment at nearby Rocket Park.

A short drive north-west of Durant is Fort Washita, a former United States military post that’s designated as a National Historic Landmark. Hear about its role in maintaining peace with the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations as you tour the restored structures or attend one of the Civil War reenactments that regularly take place. Fort Washita also hosts an annual Fur Trade Era Rendezvous that recreates life during the Civil War.

Getting around

Durant is around 1.5 hours’ drive from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport or 2.5 hours from Will Rogers World Airport. Trains connect from destinations across the United States to the Durant railway station and buses travel throughout the city.
