About Dalen

Located where the Tokke River flows into Bandak Lake, Dalen is a small village in the heart of Telemark. It lies at the westernmost end of the Telemark Canal and is surrounded by steep-sided mountains and wild fjord landscapes just waiting to be explored.

Discover the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the region at the West-Telemark Museum Eidsborg, an open-air complex that comprises more than 30 historic buildings. See the famous Eidsborg Stave Church that dates back to the 13th century before browsing the silverware, textiles and rose-painting works on display. Of particular note is the museum’s exhibit about Eidsborg whetstones, which have been exported abroad since the Viking era.

Take in the spectacular terrain that surrounds Dalen on a scenic drive through the region or board one of the vessels that cruise the Telemark Canal. Constructed in the mid-19th century, it features 18 locks across its 105-kilometre length, with the route passing historic sawmills, warehouses and lockkeeper’s cottages.

Getting there

Dalen is around three hours’ drive from Oslo and Oslo Airport. Buses connect the village to towns across the region while the centre is compact enough to explore on foot.
