Where to stay in Cluj Napoca

About Cluj Napoca

Dating back to Roman times, Cluj-Napoca is a historic Romanian city with a living tapestry of medieval towers, baroque churches and vibrant gardens. This flamboyant destination is home to classical and contemporary art scenes, along with cafe-lined promenades, cultural festivals and a seemingly limitless nightlife.

Things to do

Visit one of Cluj-Napoca’s nationally-recognised landmarks, Cluj-Napoca Botanical Garden, which boasts neoclassical statues, rose gardens, a plant museum and Japanese-style garden. The Zoological Museum is just a short stroll away, well-worth the walk with over 300,000 preserved animal exhibits.

If you’re interested in Transylvania’s past, head to the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania, where you can see over 50,000 items and clothes owned by some of the region’s first residents. Culture and entertainment combine at Cluj-Napoca’s theatres, from the Romanian National Opera and Lucian Blaga National Theatre to the Puck Theatre, renowned for its puppet shows.

Time your visit for the Fête de la Musique, an all-day music celebration that takes place 21 June each year, to witness traditional Romanian music and international acts. For exceptional dining, treat yourself to Romanian wine and a seasonal menu of fresh local ingredients at Via or cocktails and grilled meats in the tranquil summer garden at Casa Boema.

Renowned for paranormal phenomena, about 10 kilometres outside of town you’ll find Hoia Forest, one of Romania’s most haunted places. However, it’s also a popular spot for paintball, archery and bike rides. Adrenalin Park, 40 minutes south of Cluj-Napoca, is perfect for families with its high-ropes courses, crafting workshops and flying foxes.

Getting around

Cluj-Napoca’s city centre features numerous sights within easy walking distance from one another and the main train station, which is one kilometre from the CBD. Trolley buses, buses and trams run throughout the city, while taxis are your best bet for transport later at night.
