Where to stay in Brescia

About Brescia

It's always surprising how Brescia has stayed off the main tourist trail. This bewitching city is filled with historic squares and buildings, along with a whole host of excellent museums. It's neatly situated, halfway between Italy and Verona and within easy reach of Lake Garda and Lake Iseo. However, Brescia is usually missed out as visitors rush to more famous nearby destinations.

This lack of tourists makes Brescia a welcome change, especially during Italy's peak summer months. Its city centre can be explored on foot and contains a full chronology of history. The Capitolium Temple dates to the Roman era and stands next to the Roman theatre, while Museo della Citta contains an eclectic collection of exhibits, most of them housed in an 8th century monastery complex. The Duomo Vecchio, an 11th century old church stands next to the new Duomo Nuovo, which gives an unusual impression of how architecture has changed. Both are strikingly different to the 1930s Piazza della Vittoria, or the pretty Piazza della Loggia, which is a great place for a relaxed morning coffee.

Brescia is expertly connected by train and is on the main line from Milan to Venice, which also passes through Verona. From the train station, it's a 15-minute walk into the centre of town. Local trains operate to Lake Iseo and visitors are likely to land at Milan Malpensa or Orio al Serio Airport in Bergamo where there are buses from both airports to Brescia.

Brescia's history can be discovered in the various museums and galleries. Various masterpieces are hung in Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, while the town's Castello houses museums of weaponry and the Italian Risorgimento.
