The city is a gateway to East Java, where you can discover stunning beaches, smoking volcanoes and lush coffee plantations.

Things to do in Banyuwangi

Trek through the night and reach the crater of Kawah Ijen Volcano in time for a spectacular sunrise. From the rim, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the turquoise crater lake. Sulphuric gases released by the volcano light up the water and create a natural phenomenon known as the blue flames. Hire a local guide to support the local community and learn more about the famous volcano.

Explore Baluran National Park and discover a unique ecosystem of grasslands, savannahs and coastal forests. The park is nicknamed the “Little Africa of Java” and offers a safari-inspired experience. Climb into a Jeep and spot Javanese deer, wild boar, water buffalo and long-tailed macaques. The park is also home to leopards, though you’ll have to be extremely lucky to spot these majestic big cats.

Visit the Osing Tourism Village and learn about the unique history, culture and traditions of a local Javanese tribe. Watch traditional Gandrung dance performances and enjoy local cuisine like “jagung” corn porridge and “ayam dandang gendis” chicken cooked in coconut milk.

Banyuwangi is an excellent base to tour local Javanese coffee plantations. The island is famous for its rich and full-bodied coffee. Guided tours take you behind the scenes of the lush plantations and offer unique insight into the bean-to-cup process.
