Downtown Ashburton has a small-town feel and will charm you with its independent cafes, restaurants and gift shops.

Things to do in Ashburton

Discover the town’s proud artistic identity at the Ashburton Art Gallery. The permanent collection includes works by famous New Zealand artists like Nigel Brown and Rudolf Gopas. Also on display is a colourful collection of works by beloved children’s book illustrator, David Elliot.

Rolling green lawns, flower-filled gardens and tree-lined paths make Ashburton Domain the city’s signature green space. Walk around the historic cricket ground founded in the 1870s and relax by the lake. There’s plenty to keep kids entertained, including a playground and a splash pool.

Climb into the cockpit of a fighter jet at the Ashburton Aviation Museum. The museum is located on a former World War II air force training site and was once home to dozens of Tiger Moth biplanes. Get up close with a rare Porterfield 35W monoplane and admire a beautifully restored British fighter jet.

Trott's Garden is a hidden gem just outside the Ashburton town centre. The community garden was laid out more than 35 years ago and is filled with roses, rhododendrons and perfectly trimmed ornamental hedges. Bring a picnic and enjoy lunch among the flowers.

Step back in time at the Plains Vintage Railway & Historical Museum. The family-friendly museum features a working steam train, as well as gleaming vintage fire engines and a collection of enormous tractors. Admire historic buildings in the recreated pioneer village and peer into a blacksmithing workshop equipped with a working forge.
