Forming part of the Cyclades group, Antiparos is a small island off the coast of Paris in the southern Aegean Sea. It’s renowned for its authentic local atmosphere and laid-back beaches and is ringed by several charming villages that include the capital, Antiparos, Kambos and Agios Georgios.
Spend an afternoon exploring the atmospheric Venetian Castle of Antiparos, which is typical of the fortifications built in the Cyclades between the 13th and 16th centuries. It was designed with the main tower at the centre and houses along its perimeter, all of which were surrounded by a high external wall. All that remains today is the base of the tower and a Gothic gateway.
In the heart of the island is the majestic Cave of Antiparos, which is beautifully adorned with stalactites and stalagmites dating back 45 million years. It’s been used as a shelter since the Neolithic era and was a place of refuge for Macedonian generals following their conspiracy against Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC. At the entrance of the cave is the whitewashed chapel of Agios Ioannis Spiliotis.
The coastline of Antiparos is notable for its beautiful beaches and tranquil coves, such as Sostis Bay and Monastiria. Traditional wooden boats can be rented for exploring the island, with the opportunity to swim and snorkel throughout the day. Scuba divers and freedivers can book an excursion with Blue Island Divers to discover the underwater wonders of Antiparos.
Antiparos is a short ferry ride from Pounta on the island of Paros, which is connected by regular flights from Athens to Paros National Airport. Having your own vehicle is the most convenient way of getting around the island while the town of Antiparos is compact enough to explore on foot.
When visiting Antiparos, consider checking out Antiparos and Kampos as some of the most sought after locations.
