About Ancona

Founded by Greek settlers in the 4th century BC, Ancona is a bustling port city on the Adriatic Sea and the capital of Marche. It’s home to a striking hilltop cathedral and monumental Roman arch and is near Monte Conero’s protected coastal landscapes.

Things to do in Ancona

Soak up the views of Ancona and the Adriatic Sea from the 11th-century Ancona Cathedral, which is perched atop Guasco Hill overlooking the port. It was built atop the ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to Venus, with a fusion of Romanesque-Byzantine and Gothic architecture.

Want to interact with art? Visit the Omero Tactile Museum of Ancona, the only museum in Italy that allows you to touch and feel the artwork. It was designed for those with limited sight, offering a multi-sensory experience of appreciating ancient Roman, Egyptian and Greek sculptures and contemporary works.

Marvel at the Arch of Traiano, an 18-metre-high marble monument that stands above the entrance to Ancona’s harbour. Erected under the reign of Emperor Trajan by Syrian architect Apollodorus of Damascus, this Roman Triumphal arch is flanked by fluted Corinthian columns and still bears its ancient inscriptions.

Escape to the natural surrounds of Monte Conero, a stunning protected promontory just south of Ancona’s port. Follow one of the many walking trails beneath the strawberry trees, then explore the sweeping coastal panoramas, hidden stretches of sand and ancient Roman caves.

Getting around Ancona

Marche Airport is around 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of Ancona, while ferries travel to Zadar and Split in Croatia from the Ancona Port. Regular trains connect to Rome, while buses and trolleybuses travel throughout the city.
