About Al Wakra

Overlooking the Persian Gulf, Al Wakrah is an independent city directly south of Doha. It was originally established as a small fishing village and became an important pearling centre on the “Pirate Coast”. Al Wakrah’s name is believed to derive from the Arabic word for “bird’s nest”.

Things to do in Al Wakra

In the heart of Al Wakrah is Souq Waqif, a lively market with stores selling locally made handicrafts. Cafes and restaurants occupy its traditional buildings while the family-friendly sands of Old Souq Beach are just a stone’s throw away. In the evenings, locals come to stroll along the waterfront promenade while watching the sunset.

For a more modern shopping experience, head to the Ezdan Mall, where you’ll find global brand-name shops, local boutiques and a kids’ entertainment area. You can browse the latest fashions at H&M, shop for shoes at Skechers or pick up a bottle of perfume at Twaaq Fragrances. When it’s time to eat, there’s a spacious food court with everything from Chinese to Mexican and Pakistani cuisine.

If you’re a fan of soccer, coincide your visit with a home game of Al Wakrah FC at Al Janoub Stadium. Built for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, it was designed by the Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid. It features a curvilinear roof with Neo-Futuristic elements and was inspired by the sails of a traditional dhow boat. Surrounding the stadium is a park with exercise equipment and a jogging track.
