About Aegina

Serving as the capital and main port of Aegina Island, this picturesque town overlooks the sparkling waters of the Saronic Gulf. Aegina Town is home to brightly painted Neoclassical buildings and a breezy harbour where colourful fishing boats moor. It was here that the renowned author Nikos Kazantzakis penned his famous novel “Zorba the Greek”.

Things to do in Aegina

One of Aegina Town’s most iconic landmarks is the Tower of Markellos, a pink-tinged edifice named after a fighter from the Greek War of Independence, Spiridon Markellos. Built in a Venetian architectural style, it originally served as a watchtower before housing activists and politicians during the 1820s. Today, the Tower of Markellos serves as a backdrop to cultural events and exhibitions.

History buffs can visit the Archaeological Museum of Aegina, which was established in 1828 by Ioannis Kapodistrias. It exhibits an impressive collection of ceramics, coins and statues, as well as ancient weapons and copper vessels. Of particular note is an etched carnelian bead, which represents the centuries-old trade relations with Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley.

Adjacent to the Archaeological Museum of Aegina is the Temple of Apollo, which rises atop a hill overlooking the harbour. Dating back to the 6th century BC, it features one remaining column constructed in a Doric style, although 17 columns are thought to have originally existed. From the ruins, there are magnificent views across Aegina Town.
