Situated on the Steavenson River, Steavenson Falls boasts some of the tallest waterfalls in Victoria with five cascades totalling a 122-metre-high descent. Since Australian residents cut a trail to the falls in 1866, Steavenson Falls has been welcoming nature-seeking travellers and rewarding them with scenic photographs and a tranquil setting.
Steavenson Falls is easily reached on a 700-metre-long walk through the reserve, which takes you to a lookout boardwalk with impressive views of the cascades. If you prefer a longer hike, you can opt for the 3.4-kilometre-long Tree Fern Gully Trail, a one-way walk from the centre of Marysville to the base of the falls.
Keep an eye out for stunning native tree species on the way to Steavenson Falls, including Mountain Grey Gum, Mountain Ash, Blackwood, Messmate and Myrtle beech. Steavenson Falls is easily combined with a visit to Bruno's Art and Sculpture Garden and the Phoenix Museum in Marysville.
Getting there
Steavenson Falls is about 25 minutes’ drive from Buxton or 15 minutes’ drive from Marysville. You can also drive there in just under two hours from Melbourne or Melbourne Airport. There is ample parking available at the beginning of the 700-metre walking trail.
