Things to do

Hike through wooded forests to the summit of Mount Mashuk. At 993 meters high, the climb rewards hikers with commanding views over Pyatigorsk and the snow-capped Mount Elbrus. Those with limited time can take the scenic cable car ride to the summit.

Glimpse into the life of Russia’s most important Romantic poet, painter and writer at the Lermontov Museum. Set across four cottages within a delightful walled garden, the museum showcases original sketches, paintings and poems from Mikhail Lermontov, whose work was inspired by the Caucasus Mountains.

Venture 41 meters into a deep cave of Mount Mashuk to marvel at the turquoise water of Proval Natural Spring. Swim in the sulphuric pools, which range in temperature from 26 to 46 degrees Celsius. For more conventional pampering, book a remedial massage at one of the many spa centers along Gagarin Boulevard.

Over 200 years of history awaits at the magnificent Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Initially built in 1867, the Russian Orthodox cathedral boasts beautiful golden domes and a white facade. Stop by the Drinking Gallery to taste Pyatigorsk’s healing mineral water and admire its magnificent 20th-century mosaic tiles.

Pyatigorsk is around 30 minutes from Mineralnye Vody Airport, with taxis, buses and rental cars available for transport. Pyatigorsk is accessible by train and coach from most major cities, including Stavropol and Newinnomisskaja. Pyatigorsk is easily explored on foot.
