About Wailuku

Wailuku combines on-trend shopping and dining with rich Hawaiian history and culture. The town is the county seat of Maui and one of the oldest settlements on the island. Shop in the colourful downtown district, book tickets to a show at the historic theatre and explore the lush Iao Valley.

Things to do in Wailuku

From rainbow-coloured poke bowls to fresh-baked banana bread, Wailuku is a great place to try Hawaiian favourites. Sip locally roasted espresso at hip cafes and find dishes like “loco moco” at family-run restaurants. The dish is a Hawaiian classic and features a fried egg, hamburger patty and gravy served on a bed of white rice.

Wailuku swaps run-of-the-mill tourist shops for independent boutiques and galleries run by local designers. Try on handmade clothes inspired by traditional Hawaiian culture and pick up souvenirs crafted by island artisans. Whether you’re looking for jewellery, homewares or a ukulele, you’ll find it in Wailuku.

Enjoy a show at the historic Iao Theatre. The beautifully restored theatre was built in the 1920s and features a Spanish Mission façade. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and continues to host plays, musicals and other events.

Wailuku is a gateway to the spectacular Iao Valley. The lush, jungle-covered Iao Needle towers over the valley and is one of the wettest places in the world. Waterfalls cascade down the 685-metre-tall pinnacle, which is best viewed from the bridge near the main carpark.

Kaʻahumanu Church offers a glimpse of the island’s missionary past. The Gothic-style church was built in the 1870s by Christian missionaries and named after a Hawaiian queen. Stroll around the churchyard and enjoy sweeping views across the valley.
