About Khuzhir

Overlooking the waters of Lake Baikal, Khuzhir is the main village on Olkhon Island (the largest island in Lake Baikal). It’s famously the setting for an annual meeting of shamans who seek protection from the spirits of Lake Baikal. Khuzhir is home to a fascinating museum that explores its cultural heritage and is surrounded by a spectacular stretch of coastline.

Things to do

For insight into the cultural history of Olkhon Island and its shamanistic roots, pay a visit to the Khuzhirskiy Krayevedcheskiy Muzey where local artefacts detail the people and events that have shaped the region. Informative staff members are on hand to explain the museum’s creation and the early settlement of Olkhon Island, with old costumes, everyday tools and industrial equipment on display.

You can stretch your legs along the walking trail that winds through Shamanka Khuzhir and takes in several striking rock formations along the shore of Lake Baikal. It’s particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset, as well as in the winter months when a layer of ice covers the lake.

Visiting in the summer months? You can soak up the sunshine on neighbouring Sarayskiy Plyazh, a pebbly beach that forms part of Lake Baikal National Park. It’s backed by rolling dunes and a native pine forest that offers a shady escape during the heat of the day. For a refreshingly chilly experience, swimming is recommended!

Getting around

Khuzhir is around 4.5 hours’ drive from Irkutsk and Irkutsk International Airport, which has flights to destinations across Russia and Central Asia. The overland route from Irkutsk to Khuzhir includes a ferry journey from Sakhyurta to Olkhon Island. While buses make the journey to Khuzhir, having your own vehicle is the most convenient way of accessing the village and getting around Olkhon Island.
