Where to stay in Chita

About Chita

Known as the “City of Exiles”, Chita is famous for the Decembrist, an exiled military group who are today considered national heroes. The streets of Chita feature Stalinist facades embellished with Soviet symbols, while some of Siberia's most beautiful Buddhist temples dot the outskirts of town.

Things to do

Wander through Lenin Square, the heart of Chita, home to cafes facing the enormous statue of Vladimir Lenin. Afterward, delve into the city’s rich history at Kuznetsov Regional Museum, an imposing mansion with indigenous artwork, cultural artifacts and a popular political exhibit on the Russian Civil War.

Admire the iconic facade of Kazansky Cathedral and its glimmering gold domes. The turquoise building is the largest cathedral in Siberia and the Far East. Take a guided tour to learn about the cathedral’s 400-year-old history and marvel at the saintly portraits of the iconostasis.

Delve into Chita’s intriguing revolutionary history at the Decembrist Museum. Housed in the 18th-century Archangel Michael church, the museum features handwritten books, photographs, traditional uniforms and weaponry, which preserve the heroic military group who staged an unsuccessful rebellion in December 1825.

Explore Russia’s rich Asian heritage at Chita’s most prominent Buddhist temple. The temple, known locally as a "Datsan", showcases the culture of the indigenous Buryat people and features an ornately decorated pagoda roof and a terrace with a dumpling restaurant.

Getting around

Chita is a 30-minute taxi from Chita Kadala Airport. Trains arrive from China and Vladivostok on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Chita is easily explored on foot or by using the trolley-buses and taxis.
