About Veracruz

Veracruz is a bustling port city set on the Gulf of Mexico. It has a long history dating back to the 16th century and is one of the oldest European settlements in Mexico. Retrace the footsteps of Spanish settlers, explore a colonial fortress and relax in the palm-lined main square.

Things to do in Veracruz

San Juan de Ulúa is marooned on an island overlooking the port. Locals call it the “Alcatraz of Mexico”. For more than three centuries, the colonial fortress was a bastion for the Spanish Empire. Today it’s reimagined as a museum where you can explore abandoned tunnels, battlements and passageways.

Museo Histórico Naval occupies a former naval college and walks you through the city’s rich maritime heritage. Engaging displays cover everything from pre-Colombian seafarers and Christopher Columbus to the modern Mexican Navy. Get behind the wheel of a battleship in a simulator and enjoy lunch at the in-house café.

Crowds gravitate to Zocalo de Veracruz at dusk. The square is framed by handsome historic buildings and lush palms, while cafes, bars and restaurants spill onto the pavement and create a lively atmosphere. Enjoy a drink and watch couples perform traditional “danzon” dances.

The southern end of the city is fringed by sun-drenched beaches. Playa Villa Del Mar is one of the best and features a long strip of golden sand. Rent a sun lounger and parasol and try water sports like jet skiing and stand-up paddleboarding.

Meet penguins, manatees and more at Aquarium del Puerto de Veracruz. It’s one of the biggest aquariums in the country and features crystalline tanks filled with fish, sharks, rays and other sea creatures. Don’t miss the sawfish tank, where you can see the unique and endangered species.

Getting around Veracruz

Veracruz is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot, while taxis are a good option for longer distances. The main bus station is three kilometres from the city centre. Veracruz International Airport is a 15-minute drive away.
