About Madikeri

Madikeri is a bustling market town nestled in the hills of Karnataka, a rural region known for coffee plantations, cascading waterfalls and verdant hillsides. While trekking is the biggest draw, it's worth spending a few days exploring the ancient forts, peering into royal tombs and devouring delicious Karnataka cuisine.

Things to do in Madikeri

Madikeri is a great base for trekking in the Kodagu district. The region is strewn with rolling hills, coffee plantations and leafy citrus groves. Abbi Falls is a popular day hike, leading to a 20-metre-high waterfall.

Madikeri Fort has been watching over the city since the 16th century and is guarded by a pair of life-size elephant statues. Climb up onto the ramparts for sweeping views over the city. Today the fort's colonial-era church houses a small history museum showcasing local artefacts, photos and weaponry.

Located seven kilometres out of town, Raja's Tombs serve as a final resting place for Kodava royalty. The domed crypts are built in the traditional Indo-Saracenic style and are set in verdant gardens. For the best views in town, head up to Raja's Seat, a scenic lookout with sweeping vistas over Kodagu's hills and valleys.

Madikeri doesn't scrimp on flavour, with local restaurants serving up tantalising Karnataka cuisine. Don't leave without sampling the offerings at Raintree, an atmospheric restaurant filled with tribal art and beautifully carved furniture. Specialties include rice dosas, creamy coconut chicken curry and fantastic Kodagu coffee.
